Silent Night Bloody Night is not to be confused with Silent Night Deadly Night (about the serial killer Santa Claus – slightly more well known than the one I'm talking about today) which I mention because I got them all conflicted in my mind. The “Bloody” one has nothing to do with Santa and really has less to do with Christmas than the title suggests. It does take place at that time of year and contains a lot of Christmas songs, so there's a connection, but the plot could really happen at any point during the year.

What about that plot I mentioned? A house sits empty in a small town. When the owner (who doesn't live in the house -- it sits empty, remember – pay attention, there will be a test later) dies he demands in his will that it remain empty just as he kept it. His son decides to sell the thing, and shortly thereafter people start getting killed violently. There's an escaped mental patient involved, and a stranger in town claiming to be the current owner (the original owner's son). Are the two actually one and the same or is the new owner a victim like everyone else? As the plot moves forward we find out, more or less, why it was supposed to remain empty as secrets from the past are revealed.

There's a sordid backstory feeding into the current plot which is almost but not quite enough to get me interested. There's a revenge element and a manipulation aspect, but none of it is done very well. The plot is chock full of holes and things that don't make good sense.

It doesn't help that most of the acting is as weak as the plot. Some of it is tolerable, but that's the best I can say; even if a lot of the names are recognizable: John Carradine, Patrick O'Neal, Mary Woronov and a few others that might be moderately familiar from around the early 70's (none of whom are actors that have ever impressed me). Most of the time they sound like they're delivering lines rather than interacting.

MORALITY:

There are a few scenes of bloody violence in this (thus the title).

There's some sexual content but no nudity. Themes of rape and incest are discussed but not shown.

There isn't a great deal of strong language.

SPIRITUALITY:

Evil begets evil.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I don't think much of this movie at all, however it does seem to have something of a following so you might want some other opinions. I don't see what people see in it, but I suppose the same can be said for some of the movies I like. Sorry all you fans, I'm giving it dreg ratings.
