Prime Time is one of those spoof comedies that makes fun of what people watch on TV. Sometimes listed as “American Raspberry,” it does seem to be sticking its tongue out at the viewer.

Someone has hijacked the TV airwaves and dumped all kinds of distasteful programming on the unsuspecting viewers. Some of the racial segments cause rioting, and the government is in a tizzy. They need to stop this! Beyond that little tidbit of plot everything else is a look at the crazy programs to which no one should be subjected.

Most of the material consists of spoofs of commercials and TV shows. Be prepared to be offended! It uses stereotypes as jokes including black slave labor (which is what causes those riots) and religious jabs. Have you ever seen those commercials that tell you what's great about a particular place and why you should come spend your vacation there? This movie has several of them except they show the most offensive stereotypes of the region they can think of. Yes, there are gay jokes in there, too.

We get a parody of Charlie's Angels, Poodles for Christ, an American Excess Card commercial, a kid's show song about picking your nose, a drama about severely a paranoid couple, Celebrity Hanging, open heart surgery in a car to prove how smooth a ride it is, a take on the whole “How do you spell 'relief'” bit, and a demonstration to prove Die Tough batteries pack enough punch to electrocute a man, along with tons more.

Some of it is funny enough to make me laugh out loud, but a lot of it is weak and or distasteful in the extreme. None of it is as funny as it needs to be to carry the film, but some may appreciate the unrestrained jabs at popular society.

The majority of the cast is little more than cameo appearances in skits. There isn't much of a headlining star. A few of the famous names you might notice are Fred Dryer (Hunter!), Harry Shearer (about a million different Simpsons characters), and Harris Yulin.

MORALITY:

This is an offensive movie in virtually every way. Death and perversion are jokes for merry entertainment. One recurring segment is a sexual deviation telethon with nudity and phallic objects that seem almost out of place outside of a porn flick. There are a few other nude scenes including one that is something of a parody of “Got milk?” and you'll just have to use your imagination on that one, 'cause that's all I'm saying. A spoof involving nymphomaniacs has a group of girls mooning the audience, and another girl strips down at a laundromat.

Violent and disturbing content involves suicide by hanging, assassinations, and turning the elderly into dog food.

The profanity is bad throughout including plenty of crass sexual references and religious slurs.

SPIRITUALITY:

While there's no spiritual depth, there is plenty of religious content. “Poodles for Christ” and a bit on the Catholic church are sure to rub many church-goers the wrong way.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This is definitely one to avoid if you're prone to be offended by racial, religious, or homosexual jabs not to mention the sexual perversion and morbid content. Even if you don't mind that kind of thing a lot of the humor isn't all that funny unless you specifically like irreverent spoofs of TV.
