No horror movie collection is complete without a movie about killer vegetables. OK I guess this is more like a Venus fly trap – or rather a humanoid creature with fly trap-like appendages. It still looks more like a salad than a monster. It's coming! It's coming! Quick, go get the ranch dressing!

What I saw as The Revenge of Dr. X is listed under a couple of different titles, but IMDB says it's really “The Double Garden.” Others contend that it's actually an Ed Wood script originally called “Venus Flytrap.” It would seem that sources conflict over who is responsible for this movie, and nobody seems willing to step forward to claim it.

Part of the problem is that the “Revenge” title and at least a portion of the credits don't belong with this film at all but with a completely different movie. There's also international confusion. While made by Americans and starring one it was made in Japan and may or not have been theatrically released in either country (depending on whose information you trust most).

One thing everyone can agree on is that James Craig stars as Dr. Bragan. Bragan is a rocket scientist cracking under the stress of his job so he takes a vacation to Japan. His hobby is botany so he begins experimenting with Venus fly traps.

He frankensteins a plant monster that looks an awful lot like a guy in a rubber suit. Being the carnivorous plant man that it is, it begins killing people. Now it's up to.... oh I'm sorry something better just came on TV. It appears to be a reality show about paint peeling.

Seriously, this movie is embarrassingly bad. The premise is weak even by sci-fi/horror B movie standards. The acting is so bad I can't believe they got paid to do this. (Who knows, maybe they didn't.) The characters are inconsistent and improperly developed, and the whole project can feel painfully cliché at times.

I'm starting to see why the details of the history of this movie are so sketchy. Nobody thought it was worth the effort to keep up with the info. I'm sure once I'm finished with my review I'll be forgetting all that I read about it.

MORALITY:

This movie is kind of interesting because for the most part it is easily PG. It has very little and very mild strong language. What little violence there is comes across as very tame. There is nothing sexual and nothing else questionable save for some fleeting references to smoking and drinking.

The only thing that may give some pause is the nudity. There's a pretty long scene featuring 4 topless female divers. Their assets get more than a glimpse. There is one other bared breast later on. It's completely non-sexual, but the scene is long enough to make it feel a bit gratuitous.

SPIRITUALITY:

Treat your fly traps right, you never know when they might mutate into people traps.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Some ultra-die-hard Ed Wood fans have been excited about finding this movie so if that describes you then by all means have at it. I am not an Ed Wood fan and couldn't care less about this movie. However, it does fall into the category of being so bad it's funny.
