Buried Alive is all about Johnny. He made mistakes bad enough to get himself thrown in jail, but he's essentially a decent guy. An unscrupulous reporter spins a nasty tale about the kid landing him in hot water with the parole review board. Things go from bad to worse when Johnny is fingered for the murder of a guard and is sentenced to death. The one person who knows of his innocence isn't coming forth, and nobody cares too much about a convict.
I guess this would best be described as a drama. Johnny the inmate must compete for Joan's affections against other more reputable men. Reporters and fellow inmates alike cause trouble for him turning his positive prospects at a better life to a fight for any life at all.
The story, while not terrible, really only becomes engaging towards the end when Johnny's life is on the line. Up to that point the developments are rather slow though the intrigue of the lying reporter keeps it from being a complete wash.
A large part of what holds the story back is the acting. Some of the actors are fair, but some of them are weak. Stronger performances might have helped the drama be more engaging.
MORALITY:
Typical of these old black-and-white films there is virtually nothing questionable. The violence is very mild, only a suggestion really. There is no strong language or sexuality.
SPIRITUALITY:
There are a few life questions raised though not in any profound way. Johhny loses hope and becomes bitter at his chance of parole being stolen from him. He's then further wronged by being falsely accused of murder. Life can definitely feel like it's knocking us down then continuing to kick us while we beg for reprieve. I think that's one thing about the hope God offers that appeals to people. No matter how bad it gets in this life, God offers something above and beyond it. There is hope for even the most downtrodden, and it is available to everyone regardless of their past.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
This is most definitely not a must-see, but it's an OK prison-based drama if you like old films. Check it out but only if you like movies from circa 1930's.
