At first I thought Frankenstein 80 might be an interesting modern retelling of the classic story. As I watched it I began feeling like I was watching a softcore porn loosely based on the Frankenstein story. I wasted a good hour and a half on this thing, but that's why I'm here to tell you about it.
This Dr. Frankenstein is stitching a monster together from street-harvested organs. He steals his body parts from innocent victims and the serum he needs from a fellow scientist. The monster, Mosaic, becomes a serial rapist. Thanks to these crimes a reporter's sister has died; she must be avenged. Dr. Frankenstein's lovely, young niece becomes the focus of the reporter's affections, and the situation grows more dire when she also becomes the object of Mosaic's sexual urges. The police must hunt down the monster before the body count rises any further.
The story is weak and seems to be little more than an excuse to have a monster go on a sexual rampage. It doesn't help that the acting ranges from bad to comically awful. The sound design is so bad that each step and shuffle is louder than the dialogue. The editing stinks, the music has me plugging my ears, and nothing it has to offer makes up for the lack.
MORALITY:
I'm not kidding when I say the monster is a serial rapist. As a result we get violent sexuality and a good bit of nudity (mostly female but some male as well). The rape of a hooker is rather graphic. At least one nude scene includes full frontal views. Some of those naked are corpses, and there are suggestions of necrophilia. The dialogue include plenty of sexuality as well.
Violence is bloody with mutilated corpses.
The strong language is perhaps the only element that is mild.
SPIRITUALITY:
Sometimes a movie like this gets so gratuitous that it feels exploitative. Is the director looking to depict a good story or just looking for an excuse to film some naked ladies without having to say he's involved with porn?
FINAL THOUGHTS:
There's really no reason for you to subject yourself to Frankenstein 80. Even if I didn't have any problem with the questionable content it's just not a well done flick.
