The Invisible Killer is a film by Sam Newfield. Sam is responsible for a number of old black-and-white filmed including few George Zucco horror flicks that I thought were worth seeing. Most of Sam's titles look like they would be Westerns, but he obviously liked getting involved with a variety of genres. Here is his stab at a murder mystery.

Sue is the stereotypical feisty female reporter that seems to be the ONLY kind of reporter that existed in the 30's if you judge the time period by mystery movies. Anyway, Sue has a knack for getting a jump on dangerous stories. Even the cops can't control her because her man is their boss. Come on, don't all reporters date the big wigs of the police force?

Gangsters are vying for control of the gambling racket in town and don't mind resorting to murder. Even a witness under police protection isn't safe. The cops are on the case, but so is Sue and she'll go to any lengths to get her headline even to the point of risking her life or assaulting a police officer. How is the killer able to get to all these victims? Figuring it out may be Sue's only way to survive this.

I guess you can tell that this poverty row mystery from the 30's has all the typical cliches. While seeing the same type of reporter character in every one of these movies gets tiresome Grace Bradley manages to bring something to the table that keeps her character from being a bore. The acting in general is not bad though it goes over the top.

The story is interesting even if it hinges on too outlandish to be believable. I was entertained if not convinced. It's about what I have come to expect out of these old flicks which is not a bad thing. For all their cliches, there is a charm to these types of movies that keeps me coming back even if I won't be putting any of them high on my must-see list.

MORALITY:

Typical of these old black-and-white movies there is no sexuality, nudity, or strong language. Violence is minimal and not graphic even though we are dealing with murder cases.

SPIRITUALITY:

Also typical of these films there is nothing substantial in the spiritual arena.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

If you can handle the cliches and like old suspense flicks I would say this one is worth checking out.
