In Savage Girl a rich old drunk wants an African explorer to get him animals for a personal zoo. So off to Africa they go. But a beautiful white girl lives in this jungle, and she doesn't like people taking her animals. She ends up one of the captives herself. What to do with her now? Some want to use her for a sex toy but some won't hear of it which causes tensions in the camp to run high. Some may be willing to murder to possess her, but there are some who will do whatever it takes to protect her.
I guess this is best described as an action comedy. It's not really a laugh a minute, but the drunk, while over the top, brings along some laughs. I think the movie makers thought that Oscar, the stereotypical “yes, boss” black slave kind of guy, was funny. It isn't, though Oscar himself manages some comical moments.
Obviously the part of the plot that deals with men trying to rape the jungle girl aren't humorous at all. This is where the action comes in. As the two factions of the camp struggle over how to handle her we get our villainy and heroics to make the plot exciting. This is done a little better than the comedy.
The jungle girl is awfully well groomed for a wild woman. I expected nothing less. Her dress looks like it was designed by a movie studio not by a wild girl using whatever materials she had on hand. I guess it's fair to say she's enchanting, but when she screams she sounds like a bird. It's kind of funny.
MORALITY:
For the most part this is typical of black and white movies with it's lack of nudity and strong language. It doesn't have any sex, either, but the sexual intentions of the villains are pretty obvious. It never gets very far and remains tame by today's standards, but it's still a might bit more than most movies of this age. There is very little mild violence other than some fist fighting.
SPIRITUALITY:
There is perhaps something thought provoking in the way this girl is treated. She is not civilized so it is OK to take advantage of her? The Christian should be of the mind that God loves everyone. In fact, he smiles upon those who show kindness to those that society have shunned. Who did Jesus spend time healing? A lot of them were beggars on the street, the forgotten souls who had nothing and no one.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Savage Girl is not the type of movie that I prefer. While I'm not impressed enough to say it rises above my expectations, I don't completely dislike it, either. Check it out if you like jungle adventures but only if you can handle the dated quality of the early 30's.
