If She Gods of Shark Reef sounds like a goofy title it's because it belongs with a goofy movie. I make no secret that I'm not Roger Corman's biggest fan. There are only a few of his movies that I might consider “good” with many failing to even reach “adequate” status. This one falls somewhere between -yawn- and -who cares?-
A convict escapes an island prison with the help of his brother, but the pair find themselves shipwrecked on an island filled with gorgeous girls. Chris, the honest brother (more or less), makes friendly with one of the local girls hoping she can help, and pretty soon they're making googly eyes at each other. But bad omens surround the guys. The pearl-hunting leader of the girls' group here is very unhappy about the romance thinking it will bring nothing but trouble. Maybe a good, old fashioned human sacrifice to the shark god will help so Chris' girl is sent to swim with the sharks. Chris won't see the girl harmed. Will their troubles and the girl come between the two brothers?
Where to begin? There's so little to talk about because there's so little substance here. The story and characters are a far cry from engaging. The acting is weak. The scenes do not sell very well as certain shots reveal they are interacting with a very small shark which doesn't exactly scream danger. The only reason you might want to see this is for tropical scenery.
MORALITY:
Typical of old black-and-white movies there is little of question here. Strong language is absent, as is nudity. Sexuality and violence are so mild you might as well say they aren't present, either.
SPIRITUALITY:
Obviously there are some dealings with shark gods. It's so goofy it's virtually impossible to take it seriously.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I can't think of any good reason for you to see this. Maybe if you're very die hard for Corman flicks, but even if you like him I wouldn't recommend putting any effort into finding She Gods of Shark Reef.
