The Wasp Woman is a late 50's horror flick. While not a favorite of mine it is slightly above average for a Roger Corman movie.

A research scientist thinks the royal jelly from the queen wasp can slow down if not reverse aging, but the people he works for don't share his vision and cut off his funding. Janice is the head of a cosmetics company and is willing to fund the research, but she requires that she be his human test subject despite his warnings that the results on humans may not be the same as his lab animals.

The good doctor is on the level, but Janice is impatient. She gives herself extra doses which causes her to regress 18 years. That sounds like a brilliant success until test subjects begin exhibiting violent reactions.

As you can tell this is the idea of a mad scientist creating a laboratory monster. I like the turn of it, though. The scientist isn't really mad at all this time and someone else misappropriating his research causes the problems.

The acting isn't bad, though it's not exactly fantastic, either. The pace, though is very slow. We spend a long time building up to monster action scenes that aren't really worth the wait. The action itself is weak, and the monster costume looks pretty bad.

MORALITY:

Despite the monster attacks there isn't much violence at all. There's all of maybe 2 scenes with any blood spilled, and they're very mild in their depiction.

There is little to no sexuality and no nudity.

Strong language is nil.

SPIRITUALITY:

Janice is very vain. I suppose I can understand to a certain extent; getting older is not easy. I get annoyed when my body doesn't work as well as it used to. Janice takes it to a level of obsession. I'm all in favor of hitting the gym and eating well to take care of my body, but when it becomes an idol for a person it becomes as unhealthy as sloth or gluttony.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Wasp Woman is entertaining for an old black-and-white horror flick. It's not great, but if you like old monster movies it's probably worth checking out.
