Absolution is far easier to find on DVD than I expected though finding one I would actually be willing to buy is another story.
There are numerous DVD's, 2 packs, and multi-movie packs. Most fail to list all the details and some are insanely expensive for the quality offered. I'll compare a few of the options but won't try to examine them all closely. There is no HD option.
I got mine in the Drive In Movie Classics 50 pack.
Video:
1.33: This is the TV standard ratio, a pan-&-scan format of the original widescreen. The image has very weak colors and is fuzzy with flecks of trash. In fact, it's downright crappy.
Audio:
2.0 Mono: The audio is thin but relatively clear though with some white noise that becomes especially noticeable in the quieter scenes.
Packaging:
The packaging from this company changes from time to time, but mine has each disc in a paper sleeve. All of those fit into a large plastic case. You can read more details of the set as a whole in the Drive In Movie Classics buying guide.
A Mill Creek logo pops up from time to time like a bad habit. It's highly annoying.
Extras:
There are no extras of any kind.
Other Editions:
There are far more DVD options than I will list here, but there are too few details available for me to be able to tell you anything useful about most of them.
The Cheezy Flicks DVD (yes, that is the name of a real company) is in 1.33 pan-&-scan. Comments say to avoid this one at all costs. Not only is the quality severely lacking but also the DVD's themselves have a reputation for not playing properly.
Synergy has a DVD. While I couldn't find any details about what it offers it was one of the more reasonably priced products I saw. Chances are good that you're getting the 1.33 ratio and mono sound like the rest of them.
TGG Direct offers an Amazon exclusive 2 pack with Alexander the Great. While the spec listing says nothing about anything, an image I saw of the back cover looks like it says this is widescreen. If that's true this may be the only way to see this movie in it's original aspect ratio. Count on mono sound still.
There are no extras listed for any release I read about.
Final Thoughts:
Chances are you're not going to find a truly “good” version of this film on DVD. I don't recommend the Drive In Movie Classics version mostly because of that stupid logo that keeps popping up, but unfortunately other reasonably priced options are slim. I couldn't find a better bargain than the 50 pack despite its drawbacks. The Amazon exclusive 2 pack might be your best chance at any sort of marginally improved presentation.
