Releases Reviewed:
A Shriek in the Night is likely to make you shriek when you go sorting through all the releases out there. Actually I'm exaggerating so I have an excuse to use the work “shriek” in my review. There's actually only a page or two of releases compared to the multiple pages that turn up when searching for some other old movies.
There are several typical DVD versions. Only a few multi-movie packs turned up, but there's likely to be more floating around out there.
My version of the movie comes in a pack of 50 “Horror Classics.”
Video:
1.33: There is no widescreen version. The image is fuzzy and grainy with plenty of trash. It ain't pretty.
Audio:
1.0 mono: The audio sounds like there's a shower running in the background the entire time which is unspeakably annoying. There's other crackling and such from time to time. The dialogue is relatively clear at least.
Packaging:
This particular disc is housed in a cardboard sleeve contained in a Velcro-fastened box (more recently repackaged in plastic). You can read about the set as a whole in great detail in the Horror Classics (50 pack) guide.
Extras:
There are no extras of any kind.
Other Editions:
All of the releases have the same specs. There is no mention of remastering and no extras so my description above is likely to be what you'll get from any given release.
Final Thoughts:
Go with the best deal you can find because you're not likely to get much. None of the releases I found look promising as far as the quality they are likely to offer. At least with a budget pack like the 50 Horror Classics you'll get a decent deal on a terrible film.
