Releases Reviewed:

Bloody Pit of Horror has a number of buying options available with some of them being multi-packs of some kind. It may also be available under “A Tale of Torture,” but I didn't find any releases under that title.

I found 2 regular DVD's from Westlake and Alpha Video. Another DVD is a Special Edition from Something Weird. Multi-packs include Box Of Blood, Grindhouse Shock Show, and Night Screams.

I saw it as part of the Night Screams 50 pack.

Video:

1.85 NA: The quality is fair for its age though certainly low quality. There is some occasional trash and a good bit of smudging. While widescreen (somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.85 though I'm just guessing at the exact ratio) it's non-anamorphic which means if you watch it on a widescreen TV you'll get a black frame around all 4 sides.

Audio:

2.0 mono: The audio has a good bit of white noise and is otherwise also low quality.

Packaging:

The discs are in individual sleeves which all fit into a large plastic box.

The sleeves offer plot summaries, release dates, and headlining stars. These details aren't always accurate, and I learned in past sets from this company not to rely on them.

Extras:

There are none.

Other Editions:

The Westlake and Alpha Video appear to be nothing special. There is no mention of remastering or extras for either one and no comments specifically for either release.

The Something Weird Special Edition has gotten a fair amount of praise. It's offered in 1.87 widescreen and Dolby Digital mono. Reviews say the presentation is good quality. Extras include deleted scenes, production images, 2 “archival short subjects,” and radio spots.

The Box Of Blood is also by Something Weird and sounds like it includes everything that the standard DVD does. I couldn't find precise details, but at least one review says that there are a lot of extras included covering all of the movies in the set.

The Grindhouse Shock Show includes 5 terrible old horror movies on 2 DVD's. It's from Alpha and mentions no restoration or extras. There are no helpful reviews on this set.

Final Thoughts:

The Something Weird release is unquestionably the way to go if you're hunting down this movie on its own merits. I'd say go with one of the other DVD's or multi-packs only if you find a good deal on one or the other.
