Releases Reviewed:

While there are a few product listings for Batman Mask of the Phantasm, there is really only one version of it out.

There are 2 DVD listings that I've seen although the only difference that I can find is the packaging: one uses the old cardboard case and the other is the sturdier plastic case. There are a couple of combo packs available including a double-feature with SubZero and a 3 pack with SubZero and Return of the Joker. There is a mini DVD available as well. There is no high-def option currently.

The stand-alone DVD release is a single disc with 2 sides – a different aspect ratio is on either side.

Video:

1.85 & 1.33: Flip the disc over to see it in the other ratio (widescreen or pan-&-scan). It's pretty grainy with a fair amount of trash.

Audio:

2.0 Dolby: This could have benefited from 5.1 surround, but the audio is clean and clear though not particularly strong. There is a little bit of fill in the back channels. The bass is not totally absent but isn't much to speak of.

Packaging:

The original case, as I said above, is the cardboard variety.

It includes a chapters list on the inside flap.

The interface is very simple with just a static image of the cover art and a music loop. The chapters menu only allows the selection of every few chapters.

Extras:

-Trailer: A standard trailer is the only extra.

Other Editions:

As far as I can tell the contents of the disc in all of these releases are exactly the same (aside from the packaging, of course), except that the SubZero double-feature appears to offer only the pan-&-scan rather than the widescreen ratio.

Final Thoughts:

This is a release that has very little to offer. You won't be missing out on anything if you decide to rent/stream rather than purchase the disc.
