(worth seeing if you like sci-fi horror or Dead Space in general)

"Downfall" is the movie prelude to the "Dead Space" game. The overall story focuses on the events aboard the Ishimura, an intergalactic space ship. An alien artifact has been brought up from the planet below. Some think it’s a religious icon to be worshiped, others see it as a curse needing to be destroyed because along with it come nightmarish creatures that kill the crew then utilize their bodies to propagate their monstrous species.

The game focuses on a repair crew landing on the ghost ship of the Ishimura. The movie is all about how it became a ghost ship. The focus is on the security detail and their attempts to contain the murderous monsters. It ends with the approach of the ship you’re on at the start of the game.

Other than that short overlap, the overall concept (which should be a given), and a couple of other events and characters (like Dr. Kyne and his conflict with the captain) there really isn’t as much specific tie-in between the movie and the game as I expected. The areas we visit in both bear only passing resemblance to each other, and there are very few moments in one of saying “hey I recognize this from the other.” Wouldn't it have been cool to get an introduction to Nicole (an Ishimura crew member who plays a major part in the game story), see the guys using kinesis or stasis, show some zero gravity areas on the ship (seems like that would make for some cool battle sequences), or conversely in the game run across the bodies of people that die in the movie or other remnants of their stories?

There is some story setup for the planet and the religious artifact which will play into the revelations in the game. It’s also the only information you as a player have that your character doesn’t. Otherwise you only know what Isaac knows, though really that only amounts to where the artifact came from and the dangers that await the game characters.

One of the weak points of the movie is the lack of story. This is mostly a bunch of action scenes. While those are well done and appropriately tense it feels like the creators put so much effort into those that they didn’t create enough story. I’m sure they were trying to be conscious of giving away too much so that the game could make its revelations or were attempting to avoid spoiling the tension with exposition. Still, some additional plot would have been welcome.

Very little information is revealed and we barely get to know any of the characters. There is a conclusion to the plot of the movie characters we have been following but not to the larger story. This is a prequel after all. There is nothing here that is vital to the understanding of the game, though it does enhance the understanding of what is going on (in other words the game story can stand on its own). However the game is necessary to get a satisfactory conclusion for the movie. If you just want a movie for nothing more than the movie, you will probably be left dissatisfied.

As I said, the action does look good. This has a lot to do with the quality of the animation. It’s detailed and smooth. It has an anime style about it. I expected something a little more realistic looking but feel like the style works well. The big scenes tend to have a good balance of chaos and placement which keeps the viewer from getting lost.

Acting is pretty good for the most part. Several members of the cast are well renowned voice actors which helps. Jim Cummings, Kevin Michael Richardson, Kelly Hu, Bruce Boxleitner, Phil Morris, Maurice LaMarche, and a number of other familiar names add credibility to the characters. The expressions and gestures of the animation are good, and even though we don't get to know hardly anyone all that well there's no point that had me wondering who was supposed to be who.

Morality

This is most definitely rated R (or would be if it were actually rated) so don't let the fact that it is an animated movie fool you (the severed arm on the cover SHOULD give you a clue). The violence is intense: lots of blood, disturbing death (including suicides), and people getting mutilated with internal organs on display. If gore bothers you don’t watch this!

There’s a great deal of strong language – more than any movie I’ve seen in a while. F-bombs get dropped like pronouns.

Sexuality is pretty much nil. We get a quick shot of full-frontal male nudity as people run out of a shower but nothing else notable.

Spirituality

In a sense this is a very spiritual movie – religion is central to the plot. However, it is a fictional religion. So it does not tie in specifically with Christianity although they seem to have taken some inspiration from actions and personalities of religious fanatics. This is easily one of the best, most convincing fictional religions I've seen in a game or movie (which is an opinion formed after seeing more of it in later stories).

Since some elements of it would be major plot spoilers and the full scope of the story is still unfolding with additional games and movies I can't really get into all the details of the religion here. I'll just get you started.

The religion is Unitology. The Marker is a holy artifact for them, but whether or not they know of its true properties and effects is up for debate. It's possible that some don't realize the horror the Marker generates while others either know or at least suspect it, or they don't know but accept by faith that the horror is part of the larger divine plan in which they already believe. The marker itself has the ability to influence minds which leads some to flip their lids, accepting or even catalyzing the events out of pure, good-old-fashioned insanity.

There are times when it seems the writers are making a commentary on organized religion, but having completed the game and seen some of what is coming in the future of the development of the franchise's story I don't think that's the case of the whole. I don't get the impression that all religion is bad here, I just get the impression that certain forces are using this particular religion to accomplish self-serving goals.

If anything you could say that this is a picture of what religion without love could potentially be. In that sense it very much could parallel legalistic Christianity as exhibited by the biblical Pharisees (or the infamous modern Westboro group). If I were writing such a story as this I would counter the loveless religion with something more Christlike, but the "Dead Space" franchise likes to be darker than that.

Final Thoughts

I would liked to have had more story here but am pleased with the overall story of the movie combined with the game. The animation is solid and the horror pretty good even if they rely too heavily on gore to sell it. It helps flesh out the story you will experience in the first game but falters when trying to stand on its own.

Buying Guide

"Dead Space Downfall"  was actually the first Blu-ray I ever owned – not that you care, but now you know anyway.

You can get it on DVD or Blu. I've seen a Target exclusive DVD that offers a digital copy on a second disc but don't know if you can still get it these days (or if the digital version would still be valid).

The features I'll talk about below appear to be the same for the DVD, the only real difference being the non-HD specs. Judging from the strength of the presentation on the Blu, the DVD should look and sound good.

Final Recommendation:

If you like the artwork in the game you may appreciate coming back to the gallery on this disc, but I'm disappointed with the so-called “isolated soundtrack.” Your options are clear so just decide on your preferred format and find a good deal on it.

The original Blu release was a 2 disc release although the newer copies may not include the second disc with the digital copy anymore.

Video

1.78 widescreen at 1080p:

This looks great. The dark space scenes are impressively clean. The image is sharp and the details clear.

Audio

5.1 HD Dolby:

There's great depth to the sound. It's strong with a good sense of immersion. The bass rumble feels robust.

Packaging

The case is standard plastic with an outer cardboard sleeve.

The interface is a view of the Ishimura in space from the cockpit of a ship (presumably Isaac's); it's pretty cool actually except that the menu bar is so huge it covers up nearly half the screen. It's in a semi-transparent yellow window instead of actually floating over the animation so it's not as advanced as some Blu menus.

Extras

-Deleted Scene:

-Graverobber (4:13) This is actually a storyboard with limited audio, not a finished animated scene. It is a fight with a new monster.

-The Art of Dead Space: Included are images of concepts, diagrams, comic book frames, and such.  The images are large and offer slideshow and thumbnail options.  This actually provides a better look at some of the areas, items, and creatures from the game than the game gallery does.

-Isolated Soundtrack: Sounds music focused, right? It is more like a gallery slideshow with music. You can pause and control the speed of the slideshow but not advance through images or anything like that.  There are no audio controls so essentially you just sit back and listen to the music. When I think of isolated soundtrack I think of the movie playing with only the score audible; that's not what this is. There are some great images, though, with characters, monsters, and environments.

-Trailer (2:01) A strong trailer. Content warning: gore and violence.

-Game Trailer (1:25) Shows off the atmosphere but not the gameplay.

-Digital Copy: If you get the 2 disc package you'll get a digital copy of the movie.

-BD Live: Connects to the web site. Most of the menu options say “coming soon” and have no actual content. There are some animatics for you to check out (which is actually more content than most movies have), but mostly you'll just get access to trailers for other movies.

-My Downloads: While this is a menu option on the disc it really just takes you to the BD Live site where you can access any of the animatics you downloaded.

Blu Functions:

-Bookmarks

-MISSING Game Cheats: The package and advertisements say there are a couple of special game cheat codes included, but I have searched high and low for them with no success.  I’ve also looked online and it doesn’t appear that anyone else has found them either.  My conclusion is they’re not actually included as intended though there are some cheats available on the WWW.
