(so bad it's amusing)

"Laser Mission" is all about a laser on a mission. No actually, it's about a mission to retrieve a laser. No, that's not right, either. It's umm.... hm.... did this movie HAVE a plot?

Oh, now I remember! A guy who knows how to make lasers is in demand. All kinds of people want him to make weapons for them and so he's on the get list of the KGB. The U.S. sends in action hero Michael Gold to bring Dr. Braun safely back to the States (supposedly before the KGB can use him for evil but undoubtedly to build a weapon for them, too). As Gold dodges gunfire and breaks out of prison he meets up with Braun's hyper-gorgeous daughter (because of course she has to be uber-gorgeous for this to be a proper action movie and show off enough cleavage to give Lara Croft a complex along the way). She sure is acting mighty suspiciously (which she tries to hide behind her cleavage).

This is cheesy action at its campiest. Most of it makes no sense; it's all about explosions and cleavage. I mean the villains have worse aim than stormtroopers trying to hit a farm boy. After raging gun battles and hours in the blazing sun the heroes don't even break a sweat. Can't have a hair out of place to make this look like there's any attempt at realism.

The action is too goofy to be exciting or tense. The acting is even worse. Ernest Borgnine and Brandon Lee are the only ones that are any good at all, but this is a long way from teh best performance for either of them. Everybody else is laughably bad.

The one thing that keeps this from being a complete wash is that there are some funny moments. Brandon as a beggar is actually pretty amusing. Beyond that you really have to love action flicks that are so bad they are comical.

Morality

While the movie involves a lot of shooting there is actually not that much blood. There is some implied violence that is more gruesome like a guillotine doing its thing, but we don't see the gory details. We do see some preserved heads, though.

There's some sexual suggestion and even a little molestation. We see a girl's chest through a wet shirt.

The strong language includes 1 or 2 f-bombs and a good many other milder words.

Spirituality

This thing barely has a perceivable plot so I don't think I'm going to find any spiritual depth here. There's no religious imagery that I remember although it's possible I nodded off for a minute there.

Final Thoughts

Unless you are a Brandon Lee completest or love super-low-grade action movies that are comically corny then you should steer clear of "Laser Mission."

Buying Guide

"Laser Mission" has so many releases available that you'll feel like taking hostages before you sort through them all. Fortunately I've subjected myself to it for your benefit.

There are numerous unremarkable DVD's out there plus a number of multi-movie packs.

Nothing in all the postings I checked mentioned anything more or less than what I got in the Chilling pack detailed below (except the possibility of slightly better video quality, but I'll get to that below). They all have the same audio and video specs (when they actually bother to list any) and mention no extras.

Final Recommendation:

Don't get this movie, but if you do at least go for the absolute best bargain possible. You're not going to get anything worth the cash by getting a pricier release. The Chilling version is a bargain, but the video quality may actually be marginally worse than other versions (judging by films in this pack I've been able to compare to other prints).

I got mine in the Chilling 20 pack.

Video

1.33:

There doesn't appear to be a widescreen version available. There is some minor but persistent trash with an image that is pixelated, very grainy, and fuzzy.

Audio

2.0 mono:

The sound is low-quality but decently clear. The levels are pushed so high that they cause some distortion.

Packaging

The disc comes in a paper sleeve that lives in a plastic case. You can get more details about the set as a whole by checking out the Chilling (20 pack) guide.

Extras

There are none.
