(see it only if you have a very strong interest in Lee)

Young Bruce Lee (AKA “The Little Dragon” or "The Real Bruce Lee" and not to be confused with the more modern movie that sometimes goes by the same title) is a documentary focusing mostly on Bruce’s early film career. There are several lengthy clips from his childhood movies. These are old and very poor quality but provide a glimpse of Bruce as a child. His father has a short screen appearance in one of them.

In one of them Bruce is a crook-in-the-making as he befriends a gangster. In an unrelated clip he’s a young gangster himself (this one includes an odd cartoon about a magic monkey). Later he is an orphan kid kidnapped by a criminal. Hm, I am detecting a common theme here. Other clips include some moments from Fist of Fury, some fight scenes from The Green Hornet, and a few trailers and clips from his major adult films.

The more biographical moments include a short Jeet Kune Do demo, the opening of his school, his travel to China, and his work up to his death. It also includes a strange dramatization of his final moments and contains incorrect info about his death. The man most commonly known as Bruce Li plays Bruce in the dramatizations.

What can I say about this? I was pretty bored from start to finish. This is heralded as a “collector’s dream.” I guess I am not enough of a collector because I was almost reduced to dreams while trying to watch it. It is slow, with some of the movie clips longer than I thought they should be.

Besides that I think it tries to cover too much ground and therefore ends up being unfocused. It appears to be about Bruce’s early life and starts out that way, but it cannot resist moving on into his later years which it covers poorly.

Morality

I did not notice anything objectionable in this documentary except possibly the numerous ties of children and criminal activity. Other than that this is pretty much appropriate for the whole family.

Spirituality

This is a documentary focused on Bruce Lee. It doesn't delve into anything spiritual. Bruce's life, though, serves as a reminder that no matter how much fame we have, no matter how we take care of our bodies, and no matter how well life may be going we never know how much time we have left.

Final Thoughts

I cannot recommend this release to anyone except the most die hard Bruce Lee fan. I am fan enough to enjoy a documentary like Death by Misadventure, but I would not care to own Young Bruce Lee if I hadn't gotten it as part of a box set. Being of questionable accuracy, at least in the later part, does not help.
