(don't bother)

(mild sexuality, suggested violence, heavy smoking)

I don’t know why precisely but for some reason I was anticipating A Shriek in the Night to be a decent movie. I guess I just like the title. Unfortunately a good title is about all there is to like here.

A man has fallen to his death. Ginger Rogers (whose character name I forget), a nosy reporter, was investigating Mr. Harker’s possible connection to some criminals about town. No wonder he got himself pancaked. During the murder investigation another nosy reporter, Ted Kord (not the Blue Beetle alter ego, unfortunately) gets Ginger, his rival, fired. She will not be stopped, though, and manages to turn up another murder in Harker’s building. Suspicious, no? When the police supposedly solve the crimes the dueling reporters aren’t satisfied with the conclusion and set out to uncover the true mystery. Can they get past their rivalry and sexual tension long enough to survive?

Wow I actually make is sound like this has a half-way decent plot. Part of the problem here is the choppy editing and crappy pacing. That dynamic duo steals too much of the thunder that might have been on the horizon. Unfortunately the characters are rather dull and the plot contrived so there’s not much thunder to steal in the first place. Still it might have been a bearable movie with a better flow and a little excitement.

There are a few actors worth notice here. Perhaps most notable is Ms. Rogers. I guess she’s OK acting wise but I found her character annoying. I wasn’t impressed with most of the other actors. So there was no aspect of the movie I was able to get myself into. I like a good murder mystery, but this one didn’t grab me on any level.

Morality

There isn’t much questionable here. Some of the characters smoke, actually now that I think about it there is a great deal of smoking throughout. I guess with all the effort there has been to ban smoking in movies this bears mentioning.

There’s some sexual tension between the reporters, but it doesn’t manifest into anything.

There’s no strong language or anything else.

The violence is hinted at after the fact rather than shown on screen.

Spirituality

Are you still here? Move on, I'm tired of talking about this movie.

Final Thoughts

This is one to take joy in skipping. At a little over an hour long I felt like I had sat through a 3 hour movie. It gets a few positive comments from reviewers here and there, but don't listen to them, it's all lies, lies I tell you!

Buying Guide

"A Shriek in the Night" is likely to make you shriek when you go sorting through all the releases out there. Actually I'm exaggerating so I have an excuse to use the work “shriek” in my review. There's actually only a page or two of releases compared to the multiple pages that turn up when searching for some other old movies.

There are several typical DVD versions. Only a few multi-movie packs turned up, but there's likely to be more floating around out there.

All of the releases have the same specs. There is no mention of remastering and no extras so my description below is likely to be what you'll get from any given release.

Final Recommendation:

Go with the best deal you can find because you're not likely to get much. None of the releases I found look promising as far as the quality they are likely to offer. At least with a budget pack like the 50 Horror Classics you'll get a decent deal on a terrible film.

My version of the movie comes in a pack of 50 “Horror Classics.”

Video

1.33:

There is no widescreen print. The image is fuzzy and grainy with plenty of trash. It ain't pretty.

Audio

2.0 mono:

The audio sounds like there's a shower running in the background the entire time which is unspeakably annoying. There's other crackling and such from time to time. The dialogue is relatively clear at least.

Packaging

This particular disc is housed in a cardboard sleeve contained in a Velcro-fastened box (more recently repackaged in plastic). You can read about the set as a whole in great detail in the Horror Classics (50 pack) guide.

Extras

There are none.
