(don't bother)

I think the makers of Slash Dance (not to be confused with Slashdance which is a different who-cares? altogether and is sometimes known as “Murder Rock”) got so excited about hiring GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling) stars that they forgot to hire a script writer or a director for that matter.

The concept has potential for a suspense\mystery: a killer is luring ladies to a supposed talent audition that they don’t leave alive. Tori is a smoking hot yet tough as nails cop that has no problems beating the snot out of some bad guys. Her family has a tragic past (which is presented flashback-style in a poor attempt to create a backstory for her), and now she’s a force for justice going undercover as a dancer to uncover a killer.

Cindy Maranne might have been able to pull off a meatier portrayal of Tori if given the chance, and her wrestling skills could have made for some good action sequences with better choreography and scene composition. Unfortunately some of the other GLOW starlets couldn’t act themselves out of a wet paper bag, stealing a lot from the already weak scenes they’re in. The police captain is so over the top that he’s almost as bad although he does actually have a good payoff at the end.

It doesn’t help that the story plays out in flimsy fashion or that the “tense” scenes are so drawn out that they become tedious instead. The final showdown is embarrassing. The action in general is surprisingly crappy considering we’re dealing with actors who previously made their living putting on stage fights.

There isn't a whole lot of tension in the movie to begin with. If you're watching it as a slasher you're going to be particularly disappointed even though I can't think of what else to call it. We spend more time watching dance rehearsals than chasing bad guys. This movie has to have set a record for the number of times counting to 8 has been recorded on film.

Morality

I would call this PG13 if I were rating it (it's actually unrated). There isn't much violence and only about 3 scenes feature any amount of blood.

There are some sexual situations, but they're pretty mild. A couple of them involve a guy flashing his trouser worm at girls, but we see nothing of what's behind the coat (thank God). Another features a "love scene" that involves Cindy being topless, but only her bare back is ever visible. We see so little sexuality in the scene it's only a guess that they meant to imply that the characters had sex and not a stretch to say that they didn't. Other than that the revealing shots involve Cindy in her bra and lots of shots of girls in tight leotards. I've seen more revealing attire in family-themed water parks.

There are some crude references to Cindy's female anatomy and a little bit of strong language.

Spirituality

There is nothing spiritually deep here whatsoever.

Final Thoughts

I don't recommend hunting down Slash Dance unless you're just really wanting to see some GLOW stars. It's not worth the time on any level except some Mystery Science Theater ribbing.

Buying Guide

"Slash Dance" is not a movie you're likely to easily find on DVD.

The only listings I've seen are the Drop Dead Gore-geous 4 pack and the Night Chills 10 pack.

All of the movies in the Drop Dead Gore-geous 4 pack are also in the 10 pack which leads me to believe the quality of the presentations are going to be exactly the same. There are no extras listed.

Final Recommendation:

I seriously doubt many people are looking specifically for "Slash Dance," but on the off-chance you are I'll tell you that I don't think any of the movies in the 4 pack are worth the effort. The 10 pack at least offers a few mildly amusing flicks along with this one.

I'll tell you a bit about the Night Chills 10 pack.

Video

1.33:

This is the “full-screen” ratio. The quality is tolerable at best. It's pretty fuzzy with bleeding colors.

Audio

2.0:

The audio is likewise bearable but far from impressive.

Packaging

The set has each disc in a multi-tray plastic case. You can read more details about the whole set in the Night Chills (10 pack) guide.

Extras

There are none.
