What can I say about "The Giant Gila Monster?" Um, well, it's giant and.... song break! Because we're scared and, yes, we're frightened because our itty-bitty new friend has his teeny-weeny brain all set on blowing us to bits. Oh, how horrible, deplorable, this really is the pits!

OK, sorry for that. I was channeling Rob Paulsen for a minute there.

Something on one of those back roads is causing cars to wreck and people to disappear. OK, OK, if you read the title I’m not spoiling anything by telling you that it’s a giant Gila monster. A small-town sheriff and a bright young mechanic/singer investigate. Meanwhile a rich tyrant makes life for everyone miserable over the disappearance of his son.

While not at all a great movie it does manage to be entertaining. There really isn’t a whole lot to the story although the rich tyrant adds a nice layer. There is some mystery and action but not much. It ends up feeling more like a story about the hero’s musical career than about a monster. After spending time on everything but the gila the director seems to remember that, oh yeah, this is supposed to have a monster in it, better have it tip over a car or something.

The lack of suspense isn’t helped by some of the bad acting. What does manage to keep the proverbial head above water is that the characters are so darned likable. How can you not like a guy that sings to a crippled little girl to give her encouragement and hope? It’s a sweet moment. On the other hand there is a lot of focus on the guy’s performances. It’s not so extreme that it makes the movie a musical, but it’s not all that far off base from the idea, either. Fortunately the singer isn’t half bad.

I have good and bad things to say about the special effects. The good thing is rather than putting a man in a floppy rubber suit the director goes with shots of a real reptile wrecking up stuff. The negative is that it still doesn’t work out all that well. Eh, what can you do? Most of these old black-and-white movies have crummy effects.

Morality

This is about as tame a monster movie as you could possibly hope for. There is no strong language, sex, or nudity. Yes, the monster attacks people, but for the most part their fates are left up to the imagination. The actual attacks are against cars and other vehicles.

Spirituality

Let's be honest about "The Giant Gila Monster," it's cheap teenscream entertainment. Yes, it has some sweet moments like the hero singing to a little girl to make her feel better, but as far as any real spiritual depth you're going to need to look elsewhere.

Final Thoughts

If you got this in a collection by all means watch it. It’s not a complete waste of time. Otherwise, though don’t worry about it. There are better movies to spend time hunting down.

Buying Guide

"The Giant Gila Monster" is yet another old public domain flick that has a monstrous mound of releases through which to sort.

As usual there is a metric ton of stand-alone DVD releases and at least as many more combo packs with other old public domain flicks.

The only release that I found which stands out from the others is an Image produced DVD which lists a 1.85 widescreen presentation and an essay as a bonus feature. It lists Dolby Digital 2.0 mono for the sound. While there is no official mention of remastering at least one comment praises the presentation.

There is a 2 pack that says it offers a colorized version from Legend. It's supposedly a bit cleaner than other editions.

Beyond that all releases sound like they are the same specs and quality as the 50 pack version I'll detail shortly.

Final Recommendation:

If you're wanting the movie on its own merits it sounds like the Image DVD is going to be the best choice from the ones I've seen. If you're more concerned about getting a bargain just find any good deal on a combo pack. I've been pleased with the 50 pack of mine.

I got it in a 50 pack of “Horror Classics.”

Video

1.33:

This is the TV standard "full-frame" ratio. The picture has the typical trash, can be too dark at times while washed out at others, and has a few short moments of obvious negative damage. I've seen worse, but don't wish for too much out of this one.

Audio

2.0 mono:

The audio isn't too bad considering its age. I could understand all the dialogue which is about the most I hope for in a budget pack of really old movies.

Packaging

This disc is housed in a cardboard sleeve contained in a Velcro-fastened box though I think it's been repackaged in plastic. You can read about the set as a whole in great detail in the Horror Classics (50 pack) guide.

Extras

There are none.
