(not worth seeing for most people)

I'm not real sure what to classify "In the Little Mansion" as. It's not really a drama, not really a ghost story, not a suspense... The closest thing to call it would be a comedy, but it's not particularly funny although it is odd. It does have some funny moments I guess.

It's all about the ghost of a woman who has come back to stay in her house. She claims she died because she wanted to due to cancer, but her husband thinks he killed her. She says the lawyer was her lover, but the poet says he was. They all sit around trying to figure out how they can all be right without anyone being a liar and are more concerned with that than they are with the fact that they are a room full of adulterers, murderers, and ghosts. The ending is strange and maybe even morbid.

I would have to say that whether or not it is going to be satisfying is going to greatly depend on individual viewers. I can easily see some people liking it for its artistic oddity but a lot more disliking it.

This is a movie very heavy on dialogue (as most movies adapted from plays are from what I've seen). I suppose that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it sure does get long. At well over an hour and a half of people talking it can feel tediously slow. Fortunately the acting doesn't completely suck even if it’s often not that great, either. The young girls in particular aren't very good.

Morality

There is a small amount of mild strong language.

There are discussions of who is whose lover, but the actual depicted sensuality is barely enough to get the point across. We see some kissing in bed and a woman clearly strips before a guy but all we see is bare shoulder.

The violence likewise is barely enough to show a person's intentions without showing actual violence, however some of the concepts at the end could be potentially disturbing. This is easily PG, but if you're easily bothered by dark stories involving children you might want to be cautious.

Spirituality

We are dealing with the spirit of the dead returning to interact with the living. These are people who live sinful lives and seem uncaring. Even the woman's husband doesn't say anything to his wife's lovers although he obviously had enough malice in his heart against her to want to murder her. The ending is bleak but not particularly powerful as far as its message.

Final Thoughts

It's an odd movie for sure. I don't really recommend seeing it, but I don't really recommend not seeing it either at least if you enjoy talky plays on film. It'll either entertain you if you get interested in the conversations about who really did what or put you to sleep with all its dialogue. That's a win win right there.

Buying Guide

"In the Little Mansion" has an almost non-existent presence in the realm of DVD.

The only listing I can find for this movie is in the Night Chills 10 pack.

Final Recommendation:

I don't recommend getting “Night Chills” specifically for this movie, but if you do happen to be looking for it this appears to be your one and only option.

I'll tell you a bit about the Night Chills 10 pack.

Video

N-A widescreen:

This is the 1.33 “full-screen” ratio with a widescreen matte (AKA non-anamorphic widescreen) so that the image looks like you're watching it through a window on a widescreen TV. The quality is adequate at best. It's moderately clean but a bit fuzzy and grainy.

Audio

2.0 mono:

The audio is likewise bearable but far from impressive.

Packaging

The set has each disc in a multi-tray plastic case. You can read more details about the whole set in the Night Chills (10 pack) guide.

Extras

There are none.
